Gay High School Youth Invited to December 1 LGBT-Friendly College Fair
CHARLOTTE, November 23, 2007 --The college search officially kicks off on Saturday, December 1, 2007 for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and ally youth at the East Coast Campus Pride College Admission Fair. The national fair is hosted on the campus of University of Pennsylvania and located in Houston Hall (3417 Spruce Street) from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a special youth mixer immediately following.
“Finally, LGBT and ally youth who want to go to college have a way to sift through the difficulties, get valuable scholarship resources and find campuses who believe in a respectful, welcoming LGBT campus,” said Shane Windmeyer, Campus Pride Executive Director. “These campuses are coming out as LGBT-friendly to send the message: ‘Gay students are welcome, even celebrated on this campus.’”
Nearly thirty colleges and universities from across the United States have registered to attend including Binghamton University, Swarthmore College, University of Vermont, Columbia University, Lewis Clark College, Brandeis University, Hampshire College, Roosevelt University, University of Utah, University of Illinois at Springfield, Emory University, Illinois Institute of Technology and Barnard College. In addition, Campus Pride has collaborated with organizations and businesses like The Point Foundation, The Advocate, the Gay, Lesbian Straight Education Network, the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and Out Magazine to provide resources, promotions and special raffle prizes.
Free and open to the public, Campus Pride expects over 200 LGBT and ally youth and their families to attend the daylong fair. The fair will also feature expert advice, scholarship resources, effective tips for campus visits and a presentation titled “Finding Your LGBT-Friendly Campus.” The fair is being held in coordination with the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index (www.campusclimateindex.org), the only online resource of its kind that assists colleges and universities in learning ways to improve their LGBT campus life.
“Campus Pride exists to support LGBT and ally student leaders from the moment they enter college until the day they graduate,” said Windmeyer. “Whether you’re a freshman in high school or a senior, we hope you will stop by the fair with your family and friends.”
This Spring 2008, Campus Pride will sponsor a West Coast fair at the campus of the University of California, San Diego on Friday, April 11, 2008. For more information about either college fair, please go online to www.campusclimateindex.org/events or email info@campuspride.org.
